Feeling is Healing: 4 Communication Mistakes to Avoid and Tools to Transform Your Relationships
Befriending Emotions: The Path to Personal Growth and Authentic Connections
In today's world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, often neglecting our emotional well-being. As men, we frequently find ourselves suppressing emotions, believing it's a sign of strength. However, the truth is that embracing the full spectrum of our emotions can lead to profound personal growth and deeper connections with others.
One of the most significant lessons I've learned is that to become a self-led individual, I must befriend my emotions. This involves deepening my capacity to hold space for all feelings, whether they're joyful or challenging. By doing this, I gain valuable insights into whether I'm on the right track in life or need to make some adjustments.
The Cost of Suppressing Emotions
Suppressing emotions doesn't just numb the pain; it also robs us of experiencing true joy. Reflect on a time when you achieved something significant—it likely came after overcoming a challenge. This contrast is what makes those moments so fulfilling. When we avoid hardship and difficult emotions, we also eliminate the potential for the highest joys.
My Journey Embracing Vulnerability
For much of my life, I struggled with naming, identifying, and sitting with my emotions. I often resorted to distractions like excessive screen time or smoking to avoid dealing with my feelings. This not only made me reactive but also compromised my ability to communicate vulnerably and honestly. I internalized others' pain and tried to fix their problems, which often led to further disconnection.
However, by allowing myself to feel the full spectrum of emotions, I began to see the value in this practice. I remember going through a challenging breakup when a friend wished me the courage to feel all my emotions. Rather than tell me some version of, “It will be alright”, he said, “I hope you’re feeling, brother.” His words gave me permission to accept my feelings without judgment. This experience taught me the importance of holding space for others.
Four Common Mistakes in Holding Space
Holding space means creating an environment where someone can bring all their challenges and successes and be heard without judgment. Here are four common mistakes men make when holding space:
Don't fix: The person isn't broken and doesn't need fixing.
Don't rescue: Avoid minimizing their experience.
Don't advise: Offer advice only if asked.
Don't project: Keep your own experiences and judgments out of it.
Techniques for Effective Communication
To build deeper empathy and connection, practice these techniques:
Listen Actively: Focus fully on the person speaking, without distractions.
Reflect: Mirror back what you hear to ensure understanding.
Affirm: Empathize with their feelings and acknowledge their challenges.
Ask: Inquire if they need support, offering help without taking over.
Developing Self-Awareness
Becoming an effective communicator requires self-awareness. Recognize your emotional triggers and understand their origins. This awareness helps you stay present and regulated during challenging interactions. Pay attention to physical signs of stress, such as tension in the chest or shoulders, and use deep breathing to stay calm and focused.
Feeling is healing. By allowing ourselves to experience the full range of emotions, we become more empathetic listeners and better communicators. This practice not only benefits us but also strengthens our relationships with others.
