Practical Steps to Discover and Live Your Purpose
Do you ever question your life's direction or long for a deeper sense of purpose? I’ve been there, seeking clarity and fulfillment but often feeling lost amidst abstract advice and fleeting mission statements.
The Disconnect
Many of us inherit values from our family, society, or culture without questioning whether they truly resonate with our own lives. This can result in a sense of emptiness, even when we adhere to these inherited rules. From an early age, we are conditioned to rely on external authorities—such as parents, teachers, and bureaucrats—for decision-making. We are praised for being a "good boy" and punished for breaking the rules.
While some social conditioning helps us fit in and form relationships, it can also disconnect us from the innate wisdom of our intuition. If this goes unchecked (which it often does), we become adults who make decisions to gain others’ approval, rather than based on our own needs and desires.
The Journey to Purpose
My journey to find purpose hasn't been straightforward. Like many, I've encountered various self-help ideologies that promise enlightenment but often fall short of practicality. It's easy to feel disheartened when grand concepts lack a roadmap to implementation. I've discovered that true purpose is deeply tied to living in alignment with one's core values. This isn’t something I learned growing up; it’s a practice I’ve developed over time through reflection and experience.
The Essence of Core Values
Purpose is not just a lofty ideal; it's a visceral feeling of aliveness, a sense that you are exactly where you need to be, doing what you should be doing. This feeling emerges when we align our actions with our core values. Defining these values, however, is a journey in itself. Unlike inherited rules or societal norms, identifying personal values requires introspection and reflection.
Practical Insights for Purposeful Living
Identify Core Values
Reflecting on peak moments of joy and fulfillment can illuminate our true values. Consider the activities and interactions that brought you the deepest sense of satisfaction. What were you doing? What values were at play? This exercise can help you uncover the principles that genuinely resonate with you.
Look through a list of common values and see which ones resonate with you. I’ve created a free core values inventory that you can access here.
Eliminate the Non-Essential
Once you have a clearer understanding of your core values, the challenge lies in living by them. Begin by examining your current habits, routines, and relationships.
Identify areas that are misaligned with your values. Instead of adding more to your plate, take steps to eliminate what isn’t serving your highest potential. This will create space for potential and possibility – what I call the “Fuck Yesses”.
Align Your Goals and Actions
Evaluate your goals, daily habits, and routines. Are they in sync with your values?
Do you need to shift your goals to be more in alignment with the life you desire?
Are your daily habits and routines driving you closer toward your value-aligned goals? If not, consider making tweaks to your routines. Start small. Remember, consistency is key.
Build a Supportive Community
One of the most transformative aspects of living a value-driven life is having a supportive community. Surround yourself with individuals who hold you accountable and provide honest feedback.
Men's groups, coaches, or close friends can offer invaluable support, helping you stay true to your values and pushing you to reach your highest potential.
Closing Thoughts
Remember that living a purpose-driven life is a journey, not a destination. Be kind to yourself along the way. Celebrate your small wins and learn from your setbacks.
